Yule
The return of light
Yule is one of the oldest festivals in the ancestral calendar. It is celebrated during the winter solstice, the time of year when the night is longest and darkness reaches its peak. But it is precisely here, in the heart of darkness, that light is reborn.
Yule reminds us that, even in the most difficult times, there is always a spark of hope. From that day forward, the light begins to slowly grow, heralding a new cycle, a new beginning.
The Spiritual Meaning of Yule
On a spiritual level, Yule symbolizes death and rebirth, the closing of a cycle and preparation for what is to come. It is a time for introspection, silence, and deep listening. Nature rests, seeds slumber beneath the earth, and everything seems still… but in reality, life is being conceived.
This is an ideal time to:
Let go of what no longer serves us
Honor the lessons learned throughout the year
Plant intentions with awareness and love
Fire, a symbol of transformation
Fire is a central element of Yule. Lighting a candle, a bonfire, or simply a conscious light symbolizes the inner fire, that vital force that never truly goes out. It is an invitation to reconnect with our own light, even when we feel tired, confused, or lost.
Each lit candle is a reminder:
The light always returns
You too are light
Yule as a ritual of the soul
Celebrating Yule is not about performing grand rituals, but about inhabiting the moment with presence. You can create a small altar with natural elements, write down what you want to leave behind, or simply breathe deeply and listen to your heart.
It is a time to tenderly care for ourselves, respect our rhythms, and allow ourselves to rest. Transformation is not always action; often it is silence, pause, and trust.
A new cycle begins
Yule invites us to trust in the cycles of life. Even though everything may seem dark now, the light has already begun its journey back. And with it, new opportunities, new intentions, and new dreams.
May this Yule be a loving reminder that the light you seek also lives within you.
Allow yourself to honor it, nurture it, and let it grow.
